There were a lot of disappointments in the 2000 summer movie season, but Chicken Run wasn’t one of them. Made by Aardman Animations, which produced the Oscar-winning Wallace & Gromit shorts, this is a dazzling stop-motion animation film that is both deftly funny and surprisingly touching. The concept is simple: The Great Escape–with chickens. But directors Peter Lord and Nick Park take it much further than that (and remember: there’s a whole generation out there that has no idea who Steve McQUn is). Julia Sawalha voices Ginger, a plucky English hen who has been trying to escape from Tweedy’s chicken farm, where the vicious Mrs. Tweedy (Miranda Richardson) fries up any chicken who doesn’t produce enough eggs. When egg profits slump, Mrs. Tweedy decides to turn her farm into a chicken-pie factory, giving new urgency to Ginger’s plan. Enter Rocky the Flying Rooster (Mel Gibson), a brash American who has escaped from a circus and promises to teach the chickens to fly to safety. The film is filled with innumerable visual touches and the animation has a tactile quality that makes you want to reach out and touch these funny fowl. Above all, it’s played with intelligence, wit, and heart–a rare combination in any film. While Chicken Run is being marketed to a youth audience, it truly is a family film that operates on both a child and an adult level. It would be a shame if grownups skipped it because they thought it was strictly for kids. –Marshall Fine

All technical and musical matters have been discussed by other reviewers, so I’m unbiased going to say that this collection of lectures is a delight to look and listen. Some of them urge nearly 3 hours, but I never become bored of them. Bernstein, with his contageous energy, enthusiasm and marvelous communication skills, shares his views and thoughts with such suited ways; it is impartial irresistible. Impartial to explain my point, my husband, who has no musical background and had no notion what the maestro was talking about when he watched the first lecture with me, gave a enjoyable wail of amazement each time Bernstein demonstrated on the piano. Needless to say, he was glued to the hide and watched it till the extinguish without a hint of boredom.

The lectures are highly brilliant, and to understand what he’s talking about, you need musical background, but even if you don’t understand at all, it is level-headed very delightful.

Humphrey Burton writes in his Bernstein’s biography that Bernstein was having such favorable time being with young people at Harvard, he kept on delaying and delaying to complete these lectures. You can leer that the maestro enjoys so worthy sharing what he knows with not only Harvard students but with all the world. His theme is universality of music and brotherhood of human kind through music. Some of his thoughts and ideas are so very unusual and different; they amuse me at the same time construct me assume.

Even though the questions are not all answered (the more he talks, the more questions arise, I have to admit), his spirit is well delivered, and that alone makes this DVD a worship worth having.

Its quite animated that in the tedious 20th century, there was a progresive tendency to glimpse for a number of gargantuan schemes, many of which would be familiar to you guys, perhaps some of which would not be. One distinct example is that vast peril to bag an underlying theory of physics which would combine relativity and quantum mechanics - another are more obscure attempts to reconcile status theory with definite models within category theory which had been giving anguish to a determined residence of number theoretians - etc, etc.

But the human dimension to this appeared, almost as one man in the fabricate of Chomsky. His book, “Aspects of the theory of Syntax” was the tip of the iceberg of a mountainous number of papers published on the deep structure of language while he was working at MIT. This appeared to offer clues as to aspects of the structure of ANY human language, an utterly extraordinary claim. Some of his later works give clues to the possible existence of a universal paradigm for language which has massive implications for people in so many disciplines, I couldn’t originate to enumerate.

This all started, by the draw, on the route to attempting the final cataloguing of the North American indian languages, some of which had only one remaining speaker. The task was mammoth and unapproachable until Chomsky evolved a system for abbreviating sure grammatic structures, which, to his surprise, evolved into a great predictive theory.

Anyone exposed to this at the time would have been impressed, but what was to follow was even more incredible. Chomsky’s ideas speedily melded with other theories of semantics and syntax transformations in different fields, and became de-rigeour for many PhDs in computer science and anthropology, uniting what was up until that time two very, very different disciplines. Citations to his work began to appear everywhere, and in the most incredible places.

An illustration of what was to follow THAT is basically contained here. no less, a unified theory of language and music!

[You ought to obtain this - it is undoubtedly a shining scholarly work in any case, even if you don't concur with Bernstein on all points - and few would exactly agree with him on all, nor, importantly, would you need to, to serve from this.]

The argument presented is quite intuitive, but is nontheless compelling. Music is shown as being a byproduct of our humanity, extended from need in whatever manufacture, as an infant, or an adult, from utility into sophisticaion, and finally inspiration. Bernstein makes distinct the listener is in no doubt that there is something contrivance, contrivance beyond necessity in our provision for the experience of music. His explanation of the physics of music is flawless, and … anxiety gripping. And, watching the man traverse this colossal gap between logic, physics, liguistics, and the unnameable majesty of Beethoven and Debussy (both of which he performs as a conductor, and is moved greatly and visibly) is utterly breathtaking. I would doubt that anyone watching his exposition of the 6th would be any less moved in this procedure.

Apart from any of this, Bernstein entertains enormously. There are parts of his explantions that truly defy you not to laugh. He has an honesty and self effacement that is quite recent, this comes out particularly in his efforts to jabber, which he pokes quite a bit of fun at. It’s distinct how passionately his audience is enthusiastic. (He describes at length a discussion with a student after one lecture in the next one - and its determined that both student and teacher really have learned quite a bit but have obviously been a dinky combatative, at least, at first)

From there on, you might care to differ a bit. The history of the 20th Century is described rather neatly as the showdown between Schoenburg and Stravinsky, two schools of concept, two very different philosophies. He enters this very complex consideration fairly gently. I agree with his come - and notion of the environment of the early 20th century is well-known if one is to understand its music - and so he described Debussy, who is … sort of.. at the extinguish of the Waagnerian era, stretching ambiguity and tonal resources to the uttermost. Can one go further? Yes indeed, and here we have the entry of the Viennese school of 12 tone technique, illustrated with Schoenburgs six shrimp piano pieces. But oddly enough, Bernstein shows very clearly that the appearance of 12 tone technique is not unequivically Schoenburgs’ alone, but appears in the guise of mists and mirages in Chopin, Wagner, even Beethoven, but grasped once and for all by Schoenburg.

Given another five or so lectures, one might imagine that one could peruse the expend of bitonality, not unbiased in the context of the Rite of Spring (which is most EXCELLENTLY explained), but the mid century English composers, who employ this technique. Such people as Holst, Grainger, Williams, Strauss, and of course, Britten. But there isn’t time. The destroy point of these complications is the resolution into a robust defence of neo-classicism, such as the ebony concerto, and of course, Oedipux Rex. But I assume that this is a shaded method to slay - Rex is a sombre, hard work, and doesn’t quite illustrate the kill that either Schoenburg or Stravinsky seem to have unknowingly appointed for that allotment of the 20th century. In this, Bernstein may have overlooked that really new developoments in Europe, that of an emerging current impressionism (even, perhaps, Romanticism), exemplified by Xenakis, Maderna, Berio, and others, who in some sense fragment some parts of both ends of the bipolar world which was the basis for all this in the middle portion of that century.

All this is debatable. For instance, not a mention is given to either those very radical spirits like Varese, who seemed to eschew both ends equaly - or those, like Sibelius, Delius or Neilson, who didn’t seem to mind either draw, and continued to write what is now known as the mid century symphonic repertoire.

That is a long, long tale, and could build the basis of a lot of commentary. Where, for instance, is Shostakovich in all this? Or Bartok, for that matter? I reflect this is all dealt with elsewhere, but I would have given a stout deal to have seen these composers discussed at length.

But this site of lectures is so critical as a signpost, I would never do anything other than highly, highly recommend it.It’s absolutely comely.

THE VICAR OF DIBLEY finally makes it to DVD, with the hilarious first season. Join Dawn French & Co. for six generous episodes of the BBC comedy hit written by Richard Curtis (FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL) .

Welcome to Dibley, filled with some perfectly-peculiar characters like Letitia Cropley (Liz Smith), Frank Problem (John Bluthal), Jim Trott (Trevor Peacock) and Owen Newitt (Roger Lloyd Pack) . Governing Dibley with an iron fist and a sealed wallet is snooty David Horton (Gary Waldhorn) and his young dimwit son Hugo (James Expeditiously) . Last but not least is the truly-terrifying Alice Tinker (Emma Chambers), the resident verger of the church.

“Arrival” - After the 102-year-old Reverend Pottle carks it, the town of Dibley awaits its modern vicar for St. Barnabus Church. When the totally-unexpected Reverend Geraldine Boadicea Granger (Dawn French) arrives in town, no-one is prepared for what is to follow.

“Songs of Praise” - Geraldine discovers that the BBC wish to film an episode of ‘Songs of Praise’ at the local church. There’s only one problem: there’s no choir. Whilst Gerry and Alice expeditiously arrange auditions for the prospective choir, the rest of the town speedy starts becoming stage-struck…

“Community Spirit” - With the annual Autumn Fayre looming, Gerry decides to glean some more publicity for the event by getting a vast celebrity to launch it. An notion more easily said than actually achieved. When Alice casually mentions she has a long-lost cousin called Reg Dwight, Gerry puts two and two together and thinks she is referring to Elton John…

“The Window and the Weather” - A grand storm, arguably the biggest the town has ever known, has destroyed the glowing stained-glass window of the church. While the jury’s detached out on what Biblical scene the window actually depicted, Gerry decides to canvas all the rich people she can for donations to procure a replacement.

“Election” - David Horton and Gerry salvage themselves competing in the local elections, and two guesses who everyone is voting for…

“Animals” - Unwittingly, Gerry finds herself performing a mass for all the animals of the village. When the national press gets wind of the event, Gerry starts thinking twice about her actions…

If you care for BBC comedy in the best sense of the word, you’ll admire Dawn French and a obedient cast in THE VICAR OF DIBLEY. Single-sided, dual-layer disc.

“The Vicar of Dibley” is a standout even in a genre (British comedy) celebrated by fresh situation lines and hilariously wacky characters. Dawn French invests Vicar B. Geraldine Granger with warmth, vivacious personality and sufficient backbone to deal with the bizarre assortment of individuals who produce up her parish’s council. The program handles its religious theme lightly but with a qualified heart, highlighting the ability of the church at its best to near out with treasure and acceptance (even as some on the council would capture a more circumscribed notion) . The supporting cast is mild of a scrumptious assortment of talent, with each actor taking fat advantage of their character’s pecularities. Experienced “Dibley” fans will understand when I say, “no, no, no, no, YES, I know you’ll bask in this program!”

The Criterion collection is adding both the 1935 and 1954 versions of Glorious Obsession to its list of classics getting the deluxe treatment. Thus you are not only getting the Wyman/Hudson version of this film, but also the 1935 Irene Dunne/Robert Taylor version which has never been released either on DVD or VHS. Both were Universal properties, but the last time I saw the 1935 version it was so shadowy I wasn’t positive it could be salvaged to the point we would ever search for it on DVD. I was happily execrable.

The center of the epic is Robert Merrick ( Hudson in 1954, Robert Taylor in 1935) . He is a well-to-do playboy that has a boating accident at the same time that Dr. Hudson has a coronary. There is one section of life-saving equipment available in the position, and it winds up saving Merrick’s life. Hudson’s family and the entire community can’t relieve but be a slight bit resentful that such a seemingly useless young man, whose accident was due to his occupy recklessness, has been spared at the expense of the beloved Dr. Hudson. This causes Merrick to start to contemplate on life and as a result he is told by Edward Randolph about Hudson’s “aesthetic obsession” - doing valid with diminutive fanfare and getting paid serve many times over. Unfortunately, Merrick doesn’t quite understand. He thinks of this process as a vending machine. He puts in a quarter ( a superior work), presses a button and then says “gimme”. However, Merrick is the indirect cause of a second tragedy that finally does keep his life on the accurate path over a period of years.

In spite of the abominable film quality, I consider I preferred the 1935 version to the one from the 50’s although I loved them both. The 30’s version focuses more on Merrick’s inner turmoil and transition while the 50’s version is more of a melodrama and admire epic. The best thing about the 50’s version - the chemistry between Wyman and Hudson. You would never consider such a thing would work unless you saw it yourself, but it does. Also, there is Otto Kruger as Edward Randolph, the man who helps assign Merrick on the accurate track. In the 30’s Kruger could play some really hardened character, but here he is as gentle as Santa Claus. It’s quite a tribute to his acting skills - I believe he was always underrated.

PLUS: A booklet featuring a unusual essay by critic Geoffrey O’Brien.

While there may be some elements that are slightly fabulous (the widow doesn’t stare immediately the assure of the man who blinded her and whose carelessness resulted in her husband’s death even though she’d met him before? When she finds out, she actually not only forgives him his deception but falls in savor with him? ) this is nevertheless a resplendent, romantic, lush production of an equally beautiful original. Many boast about Rock Hudson’s performance and it is salubrious. His transformation from a selfish, outrageous millionaire’s son to a caring neurologist who woos and wins Jane Wyman’s character is totally believable. But, to me, it is Jane Wyman who steals the present as the afflicted, blinded widow Helen Phillips. She is totally believable as a newly blinded woman who somehow comes to terms with the fact that she probably will never stare again. And the supporting cast, especially Otto Kruger as the philosophical artist is also righteous. And, speaking of philosophy, the book on which this movie is based has a certain, principal message which comes through loud and positive without hammering us in the head or preaching at the viewer. The message is not lost in translation to the mask although that often happens when a book is made into a movie. These elements, combined with the spectacular color, lush music and magnificent scenery assist to originate “Graceful Obsession” a typical, fabulous, old 3-hankie “woman’s recount.” It’s nearly 50 years ancient but it’s mild a worthy rainy-day recount that will uplift and delight any woman who views it.

I’ve never seen a more suspenseful movie than this forgotten classic. In my view, this is the best frosty war movie ever made.

In the Arctic a US Navy ship is commanded by a ruthless captain who demands more of his crewmen than they are able to give. The captain’s mission is to shadow the movements of a Russian submarine as it tries to conceal among the icebergs. Another reviewer has pointed to the similarity between this fable and Moby Dick -absolutely correct, and I hadn’t notion of that before. It’s also a bit like Crimson Tide, but more tense and considerable more believable.

Eric Portman does a perfect job as the ex U-Boat commander. The role is loosely based on the genuine life postwar career of Erich Topp, one of the most successful U-Boat commanders of WW2, who later became an adviser to NATO. James MacArthur (Hawaii 5-0’s Danno) also does a nice job as the crewman driven to distraction by fatigue. Martin Balsam stands out as the burnt-out doctor, too stupefied to confront his captain.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Bedford Incident! Click Here

By the climax of this movie, you’ll be on the edge of your seat, watching with a growing sense of alarm as the gloomy mix of characters causes events to breeze inexorably out of control. The script, the direction, and the acting are all broad. This is how movies are supposed to be.

Similar to some other films of the icy war genre (”Seven Days in May”, “Fail-Safe”), this has a decidedly anti-war/anti-military slant, where in this case the two people who are most “in control” are a journalist, played by Sidney Poitier, and an ex-Nazi naval commander (well played by Eric Portman) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Bedford Incident! Click Here

This is Richard Widmark’s present though, who with his craggy looks and fierce eyes makes the most of his fraction as Eric Finlander, captain of the U.S.S. Bedford, patrolling the wintry waters of the North Atlantic, looking for Soviet submarines. Finlander is a loose cannon, bypassed for promotion, and irrationally hard on his crew.

Others in the cast of impress are James MacArthur, very genuine as a young ensign, Martin Balsam as the ship’s doctor, Wally Cox, Michael Kane, and in a tiny section, Donald Sutherland, recognizable more by his current convey than his face.

The sound is fantastic; from the first few minutes, with its combination of genuine modernistic catch by Gerard Schurmann, howling wind, and circling helicopter, it captures one’s attention, and keeps the tension going in this handsome sea thriller. It also has some stylish b&w cinematography by Gilbert Taylor, with terrific dissimilarity of light and shadow.

Entertaining and well paced, with every little of Widmark’s camouflage time riveting, this taut drama is well worth spending 102 minutes of your time on.

I decided that in 2008, I’m going to glance every Gundam release in the Universal Century timeline on DVD and one title that was high up on my list was the fan accepted “Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team”. As for this celebrated MS Gundam OVA series, it has been released several times by Bandai Entertainment. First as individual volumes befriend in 2002, then a complete plot in 2005 and now as fragment of the “Anime Legends”, the station is re-released with all 12 OAV episodes and the OAV Miller’s Portray.

Made in 1996 and released in a 12-episode OVA (followed up by another OVA titled “Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team - Miller’s Relate”), the series was directed by Takeyuki Kanda (”Kiko Senki Dragonar”, “SD Gundam Musha, Knight, Commando”) and Umanosuke Iida (”Origin ~Spirits of the Past~”, “Vandread” and “Hellsing”) and a screenplay by Akira Okeya (”Grenadier”, “Kodocha”, “Transformers: Armada”) and Hiroaki Kitajima (”Noein”, “Vision of Escaflowne” and “Witch Hunter Robin”) .

The OVA series would feature a talent crew such as music by favorite anime composer Kouhei Tanaka (”Ah! My Goddess”, “Gate Keepers”, “Dirty Pair”, “Gunbuster”, etc.) and character designs by Tomoaki Kado (who worked on series such as “Fullmetal Alchemist”, “.Hack/Sign” and “Infinite Ryvius”) and Toshihiro Kawamoto (who worked on series such as “Fullmetal Alchemist”, “City Hunter” and “Macross Plus”) . Mechanical designs are by Hajime Katoki (”Mobile Suit Gundam Coast”, “Gundam Evolve”, “Well-organized Robot Wars OG Divine Wars” and the “Patlabor” movies), Kimitoshi Yamane (”Cowboy Bebop”, “Infinite Ryvius” and “Spriggan”) and Kunio Okawara (”Armored Trooper Votoms”, “Mobile Suit Gundam”, “Gravion” and “Shapely Robot Wars OG Divine Wars”) .

The series takes residence during October U.C. 0079 through December U.C. 0079 (during the final months of the one year war) and from reading online reports, 08th MS Team director Kanda Takeyuki wanted to deglamorize Mobile Suits because they were being mass produced and also wanted to focus more on ground-troop level combat.

The 08th MS Team is lead by their Commander Shiro Amada, a man with a recent style of leadership. Shiro is a leader who wants to do a mission without bloodshed. He respects human life no matter if it’s comrade or enemy.

Thus in the first episode, he goes after a Zeon pilot and after the fight ensues between him and the Zeon warrior, instead of killing the soldier, he ends up rescuing and bandaging the soldier. The soldier is Zeon pilot Aina Sakhalin.

Aina is worried that a Federation officer has tried to build her life and he is nothing like other Federation soldiers. This is a person with compassion. Needless to say, in order to survive, both must work together to rescue themselves from pains and that time alone, the two originate a respect for each other.

As we net to learn more about Shiro, from episode two through five, these episodes are more or less introductory episodes to each key individual of the 08th MS Team.

The team consists of:

Terry Sanders: In episode 1, Shiro saves Sanders life. But to many others, he is rumored to be terrible luck because each team he has been a portion of, everyone has died. Shiro doesn’t enjoy in any “abominable luck” nonsense and puts his faith in Terry.

Karen Joshua: Karen is a muscular woman, a pilot, mechanic and very headstrong member of the team. Throughout the series, you learn why Karen is fighting and so passionate in fighting.

Eledore Mathis: Eledor is in charge of driving the tank. He seems to have a fascination towards Karen but his carefree style gets on her nerves. Eledore is also a songwriter and really doesn’t want to be in the military but to gain music.

Michel Ninorinch: Michel is the youngest member of the 08th MS Team. He’s not very military savvy but he assists Eledore in maintaining the tank. His inexperience on the field tends to derive on the nerves of the other team members but they regard him as fragment of the team nonetheless. Each day he sends a letter to his girlfriend BB every day to let her know that he is alive and well. But always worries of the day he won’t be able to send a letter and being killed during combat.

Kiki Rosita: Kiki is not an official member of the 08th MS Team. She’s share of a guerilla group of villagers who side with the 08th MS Team but only partnering together in order to rid of the Zeon in their state. But she grows fond of Shiro and takes fraction in their missions.

The twelve episodes for “Mobile Suit Gundam - The 08th MS Team - Complete Collection - Anime Legends” are on a total of four discs and the special on the fifth disc. Included are:

DISC 1:

* EPISODE 1 - War for Two

* EPISODE 2 - Gundams in the Jungle

* EPISODE 3 - The Time Limit on Trust

DISC 2:

* EPISODE 4 - The Demon Overhead

* EPISODE 5 - The Broken Order to Stand By

* EPISODE 6 - Battle Line on the Burning Sand

DISC 3:

* EPISODE 7 - Reunion

* EPISODE 8 - Duty and Ideals

* EPISODE 9 - Front Line

DISC 4:

* EPISODE 10 - The Shuddering Mountain (Share 1)

* EPISODE 11 - The Shuddering Mountain (Section 2)

* EPISODE 12 - Last Resort

DISC 5:

* Miller’s Report

The first five episodes are more or less getting to know the characters, more character development type of episodes focusing on each key member and their challenges during the war. You also peer a side of the war such as the strategies to combat the enemy and also, unlike Gundams that can withstand hits and attacks, these Gundams can easily be damaged or even destroyed. Also, to indicate that pilots are not always strong. They have their weaknesses.

Once you acquire to episode 6, the comical nature of the anime series suddenly turns serious as it sets up the battle between the 08th MS Team and the Zeon team headed by Aina.

During their battle, Shiro and Aina are taken far away and must depend on each other for survival and you learn that from the day they first met, the two have wanted to be together and are indeed in savor with each other.

This sets up the final half of the OAV series sets up the stage as Shiro is being accused as a contemplate for Zeon and he has set aside his 08th MS Team at risk and for possible execution as accomplices. In order to redeem themselves, the Federation puts them in a mission with a 38% survival rate and that mission is to ruin the Zeon contemptible. This also a mission that pits Shiro and Aina in opposition. Will they remain right to their side of the military or will they remain accurate to their relationship?

Miller’s Report:

As for Miller’s Narrate, assist when it was released, many people debated whether or not to purchase this special episode because it was more or less a rehash of the series but it did reach with a few minutes of essential footage.

In Japan, with the success of a television series or series in general, there tends to be a special that focuses on clips from the series. Sometimes you bag additional footage and fortunately for “MILLER’S Characterize”, you collect footage covering Shiro Amada’s trial as he is standing trial on being a gape for the Zeon.

Alice Miller, an officer of the Federation Intelligence Division has been dispatched to collect the truth of why Shiro Amada a) Let a Zeon officer go free (not once but twice) b) Why he did not seize the enemy mobile armor when that was his significant mission.

Of the 55-minutes of the special episode, five minutes or maybe less is steady additional footage. It may be a rehashing of clips from the series but the fact is that there is additional footage that has Amada explaining to Miller of why he did what he did, more on Eledore and also the Federation’s perspective of the whole status.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

The video quality is what I expected from an OVA series that took region befriend in 1995. For those expecting that though-provoking, vibrant digital search for of today’s fresh anime of course may be set off by the clarity of anime help then. But this is how it was and personally, the transfer quality of this classic anime onto DVD was delicate solid. I didn’t glean any excessive dust or scratches. Also, digital compression artifacts. It helps that there are only three episodes per DVD as well. So, you really derive frosty action-packed fight scenes and noble lighting that shows daylight and darkness throughout the jungle or desert. Aspect ratio is: 1.33:1 elephantine frame, not widescreen.

As for audio, both English and Japanese dubs are featured in Stereo 2.0. I originally watched the complete series in Japanese with English subtitles but I watched it this second time around via the English dub. The English dubbing was exquisite genuine and for the English dub, one can request the consume of profanity. But it does work because these soldier’s are fighting in a war and are on the battlefield. And also this time around, I watched the anime series with my receiver dwelling for all channels in Stereo and it definitely sounds grand better the second time around.

Subtitles are only in English.

JUDGMENT CALL:

Having now completed my viewing of the entire series, I can’t befriend but recommend this OAV series. Also, for it’s heed, you are getting all 12 OVA episodes and also the Miller’s Picture special.

At first, I questioned the lightheartedness of the crew, the comedy and humor and their abilities as pilots because the early episodes focused on their personal naivety and to examine them bested by villagers and to survey Mobile Suits being easily destroyed, I really didn’t know what to interrogate. But the obtain up in storyline and how they prepare you for the final battle is unbiased provocative, action-packed and you can’t attend but root for Shiro and Aina in their Romeo and Juliet romance and the final episode “Last Resort” (which takes space months after the final battle and the raze of the war) .

I’ve read that in the US, the final 12th episode “Last Resort” was not aired on television because children were featured. For those not familiar with the MS Gundam series, a lot of the adults and men were killed in action on both the Federation and Zeon side. So, women and children were save into the battlefield as soldiers. Also, a side not in terms of the final 12th episode. “Last Resort” was released 3 1/2 years after the 11th episode after the death of director Kanda Takeyuki who died in a car accident. The series was completed by GONZO’s Iida Umanosuke. But for those who have watched the series on television and haven’t seen “Last Resort”, it’s imperative to peep the final 12th episode only on DVD because you gather to learn the fate of the Shiro and Aina.

And again, for those who missed out on “Miller’s Portray” can now occupy it along with the other 12 OVA episodes.

Overall, “MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM: The 08th MS Team” is fair a distinguished OAV series in the Universal Century world of Gundam. You really secure a sense of how sick war is and how both sides (Zeon and Federation) and even the non-military villagers have suffered from it. But also, how MS Gundams were not indestructible. Almost like in true life, even with the most recent of technology, may it be tanks or aircraft, they can be easily destroyed.

This was a very immense incompatibility in inequity to the “Mobile Suit Gundam” films (and I’m guessing as shown in the earlier episodes) where the Zeon was impartial in fright of how Amuro Ray’s Mobile Suit hardly suffered any afflict.

Also, you gather to look a bit of strategy by the 08th team and of course, where Federation and Zeon are unbiased at each others throats in many Gundam storylines, for this storyline, you have a Federation commander and a major Zeon pilot who have fallen in appreciate with each other. It really is a Gundam “Romeo and Juliet” storyline with an impressive ending. A expansive payoff for those who have watched the OVA’s overtime.

“Mobile Suit Gundam - The 08th MS Team - Complete Collection” via Bandai Entertainment’s “Anime Legends” is highly recommended!

MS Gundam: The 08th MS Team - Anime Legends Complete Box is immense overall.

It is actually 355 minutes long, NOT 335 minutes. It comes with alot of bonus clips that rush an average of 3 minutes. These bonus clips are about how the UC colonies started building in area, how The Principality of Zeon started, their Zeon mobile suits, and about an overview of Mobile Suit Gundam series. It also has the Mobile Suit/Vehicles/Characters Encyclopedia of the 08th MS Team series. The box situation is thin, like a regular single DVD box, but contains 5 discs. 4 discs possess all 12 episodes, and the 5th disc contains Miller’s Characterize.

The animation itself is awesome, and in my conception, is better than or on par with the animation of Gundam Seed or Gundam 00.

The only thing that disappoints me is that it does not have Widescreen.

I occupy being enormously impressed with this 2-part made-for-TV movie when it was first broadcast in 1996, and the intervening twelve years have not diminished it any. The production is fairly honest to Swift’s unique, and contains many innovative and surprisingly-effective special effects (for the time) . All of the cast members give boffo performances, particularly hammy Peter O’Toole in the role of a lifetime. But most impressive of all is the gentle and very sly interweaving of fantasy and insanity, where Lemuel Gulliver’s station of mind continuously shifts between frames of reference both in size and veracity.

Swift’s coarse sense of humor is given free expression, and the biting satire of his political wit collected rings familiar 270 years later. The film contains the free-wheeling giddiness of Terry Gilliam’s “Time Bandits” (1981) and the time- and frame-of-reference-shifting vertigo of “Smoke Signals” (1998) . Microscopic details and thrown-away background elements earn it a production for rewarding repeated viewing.

In short this is a film of Brobdingnagian proportions which has received Lilliputian acclaim. This is a gap of Yahooian injustice.

Johnathan Swift’s beloved satire has amused readers for over 250 years, and shows no signs of waning. So many people have loved (or at least read) it, that it presents difficult target for movie-makers. No matter how they render it, they’re certain to violate someone’s image of the sage. Despite a very few flaws, this version works remarkably well.

For one thing, it presents a reasonably complete telling of Lemuel Gulliver’s yarn. I haven’t read the unusual lately, but this seems to cloak the entire narrative, not fair notorious favorites like the visit to Lilliput. It also covers some of the moments that other versions skip, like putting out the Lilliputian palace fire. A parody of academic research holds up well, too, and might be even more relevant today than when Swift poked fun at the Royal Society’s experimenters. Competent special effects accomplish it easy to suspend disbelief for the film’s duration.

Perhaps it’s unfair, but the high points of this recreation work so well that the few gross points seem even lower by disagreement. The visit to Brobdingnag retains its political bite, buthis made-for-TV movie had to lop a few “adult” moments from Swift’s version. The Struldbrugs really suffered at this director’s hands, though. Perhaps there was some political correctness hiss in toning their senility down, but that passage lost nearly all the impact of the current.

The qualified outweighs the poor, however, and the valid includes some grand star power, including Omar Sharif, Peter O’Toole, and John Gielgud in brief but distinguished roles. The storytelling format works too, as flashbacks of chronicle bubble up through Gulliver’s damaged mind. This two-disc position is obvious to brighten many rainy afternoons, as long as your younger viewers aren’t vexed sorts.

Twenty years later, Mike is living with his best friend Ned. His wife has filed for divorce. Mike goes to win his children up from school and runs into a curious (mostly unexplained) janitor who asks him if he would like to be seventeen all over again.

Later that night, Mike falls into a watery vortex and is seventeen again, but he is not reliving his senior year in 1989…but just now in 2009.

The movie is a miniature hard to follow at times, and the ending is rushed–and some viewers will request how this resolution was reached based on a few scenes. But honest go with it.

Zac Efron proves that he is more than “High School Musical” material. The young actor delivers his lines in a design that makes you bear that he is both 17 and 37.

Parents sign that this movie is rated PG-13. It contains fighting, sexual references, teenage drinking, and some language.

This was a radiant fun movie to glance. I like this particular type of anecdote, so I knew going in that I’d have some fun with it.

Zac Efron is actually a decent actor, and he was far less orange in this movie than he typically is.

He had grand chemistry with his costars, played the displaced middle veteran guy ravishing well, handled the fatherly vibe with his son and daughter in a believeable fashion.

My problems with the movie include:

1) Matthew Perry and Zac Efron glimpse nothing alike. I’m 26 years out of high school and while I don’t see 17, I calm peek like my younger self.

Maybe David Cassidy should have been chosen for the older role, but then they would have had to go for a distinguished older ‘older role’ which would have made the wife/kid attraction seriously creepy.

2) The mom hardly EVER interacted with her kids. She had some interaction/fondness for her son, but almost none with her daughter. When the daughter and mother were together in scenes it was if they didn’t know each other. The daughter is dating a very rotten guy who behaves abusively to the son in their contain house and neither parent was aware?

Overall, fun movie to see. Could have been far better if the writers had bothered to script a better area. Lack of assist sage on the characters made it hard to really understand the wife’s rage, or the children’s complete dismissal of the father.

James Garner is qualified in this WWII thriller about Major Pike, a man who is drugged and kidnapped on a mission in Lisbon, which was a hub of intrigue during the war years. He is taken to an “American hospital” in Germany, where they whine him he has amnesia, and has been hospitalized for years, in hopes of getting information on where and when the Allied invasion will choose residence. With some hair dye and leer drops that blur his vision, and a newspaper that is dated “May 15, 1950″, Maj. Pike is disoriented, and believes the justify hoax, but has an uneasy feeling that all is not as it seems.

The people who pretend to be “helping him” are Eva Marie Saint as his nurse, Anna, who has a numbered tattoo from Auschwitz, and will do anything not to be sent wait on there, and Rod Taylor as Major Gerber, the psychiatrist. Werner Peters is the scandalous SS Agent Schack, whose only interest is in his occupy promotion. The main thrust of the location is how Maj. Pike is to survive, and how he can retain the Nazis in the gloomy about D-Day. There are a few twists to the legend, which for the most fraction holds water, though there is a small discrepancy that to me is now positive, but I have seen this film countless times, and do not reflect I noticed it until the 3rd viewing.

The taut script is based on Roald Dahl’s “Beware of the Dog”, and the direction by George Seaton is nicely paced with many tense moments. Dimitri Tiomkin aloof the soundtrack, and the dim & white cinematography by Philip Lathrop was shot on region in Portugal, Germany and Yosemite National Park. Total running time is 115 minutes.

Please note: The two stars above do not exhibit my verdict on the film itself, but rather the curious transfer to DVD provided by the folks at Warner Home Video. For most of the running time this DVD looks honest splendid, with a salubrious grey scale, ravishing disagreement and a arresting image. Thankfully, white speckles are also quite absent, which is certainly not always the case when it comes to transfers of classic product from Warner.

But in almost all of the darker scenes throughout the film, the focus goes draw off, especially damaging in the just half of the cover. And when it comes to the final sprint sequence with Garner and Saint, this irritating double contour softness continues for half a reel or so, effectively ruining mighty of the suspense.

If this pickle is a defect that exists on all surviving materials in the film vaults, then Warner should have had the decency to warn potential consumers with at least a sticker on the hide. But my guess is that this blurry jinx could have been corrected with some salubrious quality attention before the discs were made and distributed. If Warner have the guts and will, they ought to take this DVD pronto before its domestic street date on June 5, and earn a hopefully unique transfer available as soon as possible.

Everything about this film is top notch, except at 60 minutes, I was left wanting more. Every one of the 60 minutes in the film is a gem, but it’s so well done that you wish it could have been a 90 or 120 tiny share.

Neil deGrasse Tyson is a sparkling narrator, and his enthusiasm for the topic is demonstrate without sneaking through. Dr. Tyson loves astronomy, and sometimes his excitement can overwhelm. Here, he is factual on the sign.

If you have even the most remote interest in astronomy or science, you’ll relish this movie. You may also collect yourself looking at telescope prices so that you can have the same experience as Galileo. (Snappily bit of advice: if you do shop for telescopes, ignore claims of “power.” What you really want is light-gathering ability, or the size of the lens. The bigger the scope, the more you’ll fetch to gaze.)

This offers something for multiple audiences. Of course, the chemistry- and physics-loving crowd will indulge in this. Howerver, we science haters can secure something out of this too. The work speaks about how when original telescopes win images of outer station, they set aside them on the internet so that teens and artists can spend them or be inspired by it. The work said that we can say destructive meteors 30 years before they approach the Earth, the implication being that we’ll have the technology to raze them. The work said that there are 300 Earth-like planets found, so maybe this will inspire or intrigue “Star Wars” and “Star Toddle” fans.

For people who abominate history, this only briefly deals with that topic. It speaks of how tremendous minds introduced the heliocentric model in disagreement to the then-accepted geocentric one. For the visually-stimulated, watching the CGI graphics is trustworthy on its maintain terms. For history haters, this work does not dwell on the past. It presents residence as a wild frontier of which we do not know great. For those involved in the future or pushing the envelope, that message will support you watching.

I win reading in middle school history classes that neither maps nor globes do justice to the physical shape and sight of Earth. This work points on how older telescopes made blurry images or had to hold getting longer. This works speaks of the inventors who corrected these problems. The work concludes with telescopes that will be as mammoth as football fields that will describe images that humans have never seen.

Remember when Bart Simpson looked into a telescope and said, “Wow! The universe obvious is dreary.” It’s amusing that “wow!” and “tiring,” are being archaic in the same sentence. Peaceful, this documentary tries to interest those who care about location and those who don’t give a toot. Even its discussion of how color-various photographs tells us more than black-and-white ones will keeps those fascinated how like rainbow-like images.

I wish the work had more diverse interviewees. Unexcited, the work is distinguished stronger and more though-provoking than the title would suggest.
