Before we start, make sure you know what firmware you are currently running on your iPhone. There will be another guide posted up for this if you need any help. Remember, this will work on any bootrom, but only 3.1.3 and 3.1.2 firmware. This means that as long as you are running those firmwares, this jailbreak can unlock your iPhone, no matter if it is 3G or 3GS. Also, there is a difference between jailbreaking and unlocking. Jailbreaking means to allow your iPhone to use 3rd party apps. Unlocking, however, means to use another carrier than the carrier that your iPhone is locked to in your country. For example, in the U.S. you can use your iPhone with a different carrier than AT&T.

Now for this jailbreak we will be using Spirit which can be found at www.spiritjb.com. This is the program that will do all the jailbreaking. So, download this program for whichever platform that you are using: Mac OS, Windows, or Linux. Also, make sure that you are running iTunes that is lower than 9.2. However, I jailbroke my iPhone using iTunes 9.2 without any problems whatsoever. To be on the safe side, you should use an iTunes lower than 9.2. Ok, now plug in your iPhone to your computer. It doesn’t have to be in DFU mode, recovery mode, or any other non responsive mode. Also, this iPhone has to be activated. It cannot be stuck on the connect to iTunes screen and put in a sim card. You can activate your iPhone with any At&T sim card. It does not even have to be activated (the sim card I mean). Now, iTunes will recognize your iPhone which means that your computer also recognizes it. You don’t need iTunes anymore after this. Then, open the Spirit program and it will read under the “Jailbreak” button what device you have plugged in. If the device that it states is correct then simply press the “Jailbreak” button and let Spirit do its thing. It might reboot your iPhone a few times and it will take a few minutes because it is hacking into your iPhone. You will know that it is working when there is a bright supernova-like explosion on your iPhone when it reboots. Then, your iPhone will come to the screen that says “slide to unlock” and your iPhone is jailbroken. To be sure, unlock your iPhone and check to see if there is a Cydia application on your Springboard. The Cydia application can only be installed if the iPhone is jailbroken. That’s it. Your iPhone has been jailbroken. Those of you who do not wish to unlock can stop reading here, because the rest of this guide is how to unlock your iPhone.

Now to unlock your iPhone, open Cydia (the app that came with the jailbreak) and go to Manage in the bottom bar. Then go to Sources -> Edit -> Add and type in repo666.ultrasn0w.com into the box that pops up. I didn’t make a typo here, the o in ultrasn0w is a zero not the letter o. After it does its thing and adds the source for you click on the new source in your manage sources list. This will bring up the application ultrasn0w. Click on it and then tap install in the top right hand corner. This will install ultrasn0w and might reboot your iPhone a few times. Keep in mind that there will not be an icon for ultrasn0w in your Springboard, but after it is installed reboot your iPhone again. When I mean reboot I mean turn it completely off and then turn it back on. There you go. Your iPhone is now unlocked and you can put in any GSM carrier sim card in your iPhone and it will work. T-Mobile users, however, will have to disable 3G for it to work.

As we reported earlier, both PwnageTool 4.2 for Mac and Sn0wbreeze 2.2 for Windows are now available which can preserve baseband, and jailbreak iPhone, iPad and iPod touch on iOS 4.2.1 firmware.

This new version of PwnageTool and Sn0wbreeze also incorporates kernel based GreenPois0n exploit, which means that you can now create untethered 4.2.1 custom firmware files without the upgraded baseband so that you can unlock with current version of Ultrasn0w.

Simply follow the step by step instructions in the video embedded below to create custom 4.2.1 IPSW file without the upgraded baseband to jailbreak your iOS device.

Once you are done with the jailbreak, you can unlock your iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G on the old baseband using Ultrasn0w 1.2.

NOTE: You can also use this with iPhones which are flashed on 06.15 baseband so you can restore with this CFW (custom firmware).

Chronic Dev Team has finally released the much awaited GreenPois0n RC5 which brings full untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak for all iOS devices. Unlike Redsn0w 0.9.7, GreenPois0n RC5 doesn’t require you to have SHSH blobs of 4.2b3 saved on Cydia. You can jailbreak any iOS device out of the box on iOS 4.2.1 using this latest version of GreenPois0n.

The following instructions will help you jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod touch 2G/3G/4G, iPad and Apple TV 2G using GreenPois0n.

NOTE: If your iPhone 4 rely on an unlock, do not update to iOS 4.2.1 yet as doing so will upgrade your baseband, making it impossible for now to unlock.

Step 1: Download GreenPois0n from the link given below.

Step 2: Connect your iPhone via USB to your computer and click on “Jailbreak” as seen in the screenshot below.

Step 3: Now follow the following onscreen instructions to enter DFU mode:

  • Press and hold the sleep button for 2 seconds
  • Continue holding sleep; press and hold home for 10 seconds.
  • Release sleep button; continue holding home for 15 seconds.

Step 4: GreenPois0n will now start “Jailbreaking” your iOS device untethered on 4.2.1.

Step 5: Your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch should now be successfully jailbroken on iOS 4.2.1. Now start “Loader” found on the homescreen and install Cydia.

This is it! You are done !

UPDATE 1: Our complete step by step video guide is up!

UPDATE 2: GreenPois0n RC5_2 is up! Brings various bug fixes, including: GreenPois0n Initialized error.

UPDATE 3: If you are already using a tethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak using Redsn0w 0.9.6, just run GreenPois0n over it to untether iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak.

UPDATE 4: Windows version of GreenPois0n is now available for download. More details here.
